The story
Gabriel Jones is four hundred and seventy-six years old, and the world has finally grown into him: known in schoolrooms on three planets, his long labor built into the keel of a starship rising over the desert. He comes back one last time to the dead town where his story began, and then sets out on the longest road there is, a crossing between the stars in the company of the mind he grew from grief, toward a shore no one has seen.
The Longest Road is the third novel of The Immortal Gabriel Jones, a story about memory, legacy, and the ways a person is kept.

The Stones
He came down to Sabinal Flat from the north, on a road the county had stopped claiming a century ago, and he came the old way, on wheels, with his hands on the controls, because some errands are owed the full length of the road.

This one follows Gabriel all the way out, past his own century and past the world that finally learned him, to the far shore of the longest road, and the last question a deathless man is left with: whether any of it was real, and whether he can, at the end, be allowed to arrive.
It is the close of the trilogy, and a complete story on its own.
